The Open has started with a bang! The box is literally vibrating from the energy and excitement. Personally I love this season – and I hate it at the same time. The energy of the athletes and their records and achievements is exhilarating – but the hours are long. Imagine: Before Friday at 2:00 nobody knows how long the WOD will be (how many people can we run in the heats and how long will the heats be?), what equipment we need to use (have we got enough plates of the right kg size in every box?) and so on… Making sure the equipment is on point and in place is only a little thing compared to making sure all the scores are inserted on time and correctly! But our team always does a great job and everyone of the coaches helps and is willing to go the extra mile for this special event – they make these next 6 weeks possible. Thank you!

The Coaches and Open organizers Kevin & Samy

The first Workout “17.1” was released last Friday and consisted of a Couplet of Dumbbell Snatches and Burpee Box Jump-Overs. Both “new” movements to the Open, but both very humbling.

The combination of the two movements truly looked like a test of fitness. The Open is a series of 5 Workouts released between Friday and Monday for the next 5 weeks. On there are live feeds, stories and a worldwide leaderboard the CrossFit athletes obsess over from now until April. 125 athletes registered for our three boxes. They are split into four even teams and for every participant the teams earn points every week. At the end of the Open we will do an internal sixth WOD awarding points along the way and see which team comes out on top.

So, this is how we kicked off the first WOD in Meilen last Saturday:

Open WOD 17.1

For time:
10 Dumbbell snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
20 snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
30 snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
40 snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs
50 snatches
15 burpee box jump-overs

M: 50-lb. dumbbell / 24-in. box
F: 35-lb. dumbbell / 20-in. box

Time cap: 20 minutes

With an RX and Scaled version there was something for everyone – but the amount of Burpees was not scalable. If one succeeded to to everything in the timecap, it was a total of 150 snatches and 75 burpees over the box. It was clear from the start that for many, many this would be a 20min test of grit and perserverance. But we had trained those burpee box jump-overs enough the last weeks – and so we brought on the heat!

The WOD was horrible – so simple, so effective. If you didn’t pace it correctly it spit you out onto the floor like a mixer. Controlling your back and using your legs to their full potential really helped against a complete back strike – finding your correct pace ensured you could get through all the burpees in between…

Our four teams brought their cool Open shirts – the colors brown, navy, green and red were flashed – and we even had dressed up monkeys running around. The “Super Saturdays” are always the days with the most excitement and one team will win the extra 5 teamspirit points.

The athletes gave it their all and here are the top results from all boxes combined:

  8. Michelle Koller 18:02
  9. Derya Demir 18:08
  10. Maria Cazares 18:27

Every Top 3 score earns an additional point in our Open Team Fun – Congrats! Special gratulations to Agnes who with her score would earn a Top 200 worldwide in her age category. Gianna, one of our strong youngsters scored an incredible 15:00 score which is the Nr. 27 score in Switzerland!

Also I would like to mention the newer athletes that took on the challenge: Janine, Denise, Cristiane, Claudio and Simona only just finished their first 6 weeks of training with us. But our “newest” Open participant started only 2 weeks ago: Carina – great to have you as part of our team!

Many athletes choose to take on RX – which we always encourage. If you can handle the weight, the Open is the time for you to shine – attempt it, let the cheers carry you and try to get a new record. Others challenged themselves with Scaled and grit their teeth. Awesome work everyone!

If you like to see a taste of how the Pros do this WOD, you can check the live announcement of 17.1 – these announcements are done ever Friday at 2:00 in the morning our time and you can watch them online!

The team spirit points went to the Snatch Monkeys for their monkey chant and dressed up monkeys.

This brings us to the following ranking:

  1. Snatch Monkeys 72 points
  2. Wodzillas 62pts
  3. Wod Heros 60pts
  4. Booty and the Beast 52pts

So the Snatch Monkeys are in the lead – thanks to the teamspirit points and a strong showing in the Top 3 scores. But all teams are very close together and we are excited to see what the next WOD brings!!!
